Black Shades

Black Shades is a “psychic bodyguard fps” freeware game where you are tasked to do escort missions with a variety of weapons and enemies, and different situations including zombie levels!

The game graphics are deliberately simple blocky graphics, but this ensures fast and furious action with plenty of ragdoll npcs falling around. A neat choice to burn out some energy in a series of increasingly fast paced short duration levels. You can also engage limited duration powers such as bullet time, a life saver when multiple enemies attack at one.

Whoever the white suited guy you’re tasked to protect is, he’s
certainly not a popular dude!

Obviously, this is tongue in cheek – the game is a vertical shooter with a sarcastic ecological message, but it’s certainly fun to play! Go to harpooned’s website and download it to see for yourself.

Gunroar – 360º gun boat shooter

Gunroar is a fast paced forward scrolling arcade game where you control a speedboat with a machine gun and special ray gun weapon fighting hordes of enemies unleashing a true bullet hell against you. The firing mechanism locks the attitude of the boat so you have to remain in the same angle (Though you can move around) while firing, and depressing the fire button allows you to pick up a new heading.

Fast paced, colourful, fun and free! Try it out

Spheres of Chaos – Psychedelic asteroids

Some games claim to be trippy, but Spheres of Chaos is the real deal. The gameplay is classic “asteroids”, but the visuals are definitely not for the epilepsy prone!

the game is currently freeware until the next improved version, so give it a go!

Hikkikomori Quest RPG v1.01.1

From the people who brought you Pirate Baby and Kings of Power and some other stuff I can’t remember just now, comes a cool freeware RPG, “Hikkomori Quest”. What’s a Hikkomori? Well, it’s the Japanese word for a no-life shut in who doesn’t interact with the outside world. Something I’m sure no one reading this can identify with in any way whatsoever. Yep. Yep. *cough*

Real Lives

Real Lives, a game by educations simulations is a free to try simulation game which lets you create a person living in the world that we live in, and progress through it’s life year by year, with options and events based on hard real world statistics. Since a vast majority of the world’s population lives in the 3rd world, you probably will be “born” in a poverty stricken country, and will face malnutrition and disease growing up. Family members will die due to preventable causes (Either accidents or political strife), as you grow up you may be involved in political activism that can lead to your imprisonment or death, or you can choose to live a quiet life, or risk emigration to find a better life  (Emigration had a tendency to break the game when I last played it, but maybe the newer versions are improved)

If you have a healthy reserve of black humour, Real Lives can be a fun experience, but no matter how callous you can be, it’s always sobering in the end.

3d in your browser

Here’s a fairly amazing demo from Alternativa 3d showing their 3d in-a browser technology. The nicest thing about it is it runs via flash, straight on your browser without having to muck around installing programs or plugins.

While I don’t enjoy the idea that gimmicky flash websites might become even more gimmicky, the possibilities are, like they say, endless.

Nanaca Crash

Nanaca Crash is a cute little flash game where you control a girl who crashes into her schoolmate with her bicycle and sends him flying into the air. You control the initial angle and force of the impact and as the unfortunate flies through the air and bounces off the ground he can come into contact with several other characters who will either stop him (Ending the game) or propel him further with a variety of strikes and punches that can be affected by timed clicks of the mouse. Additionally you can use the title character, Nanaca to teleport in and crash into him again propelling him even further forward or strategically pushing him into other characters that will trigger bonuses.

It’s really quite addictive and the music is catchy as hell.

The original creator’s site is here but you can play a local mirror of the game here (If you save the file to your hard drive you can save your high scores more permanently)

GLtron

GLtron Homepage

Remember that movie Tron from the 80s? If you’re not old enough to have seen it when it came out, you might’ve seen it on TV sometime. The premise was that programs are alive inside the computers and when a programmer is disintegrated and scanned into the computer by an evil AI he finds himself fighting alongside a rebel program called Tron. The graphics were really spectacular for the time, but being computer generatd they have long since become obsolete, and yet since they were so stylized and trying to create a completely fictional world, they still have a lot of charm.

Obviously nowadays it doesn’t take millions of dollars in computer equipment to render a few primitives, so an enterprising programmer (Andreas Umbach) took it on himself to reproduce one of the more impressive set pieces from the movie, the light bike battles, in which the programs raced high speed motorbikes that turned at right angles, leaving behind solid walls of light against which they had to make their opponents crash.

The reproduction of the movie’s visuals and the feel of the gameplay is spot on, and since it’s freeware and doesn’t require massive processing power, you really have no excuse to try out GLtron
