About the Role:

This critical role within DBT’s Project Delivery and Change Directorate is responsible for leading a team of project delivery professionals in planning, prioritizing, and assuring departmental transformation initiatives. The Deputy Director will oversee a substantial portfolio of major projects, valued at approximately 35bn, and play a key leadership role in setting standards for project delivery excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee DBT’s Major Projects Portfolio, valued at approximately 35bn.
  • Provide scrutiny, assurance, and performance reporting to the Investment Committee.
  • Define and implement strategies and standards for project delivery across the Department.
  • Lead capability development for project delivery professionals.
  • Mobilize planning capability for the upcoming Spending Review.
  • Advise the Executive Committee (ExCo) and partner with Senior Responsible Owners (SROs) and Programme Managers.
  • Liaise with counterparts across Whitehall and the Infrastructure Projects Authority (IPA).
  • Ensure robust policies, practices, and frameworks are in place to manage the portfolio and deliver programmes.
  • Provide recruitment, learning, and career development opportunities for project delivery professionals.
  • Partner with senior programme leaders to advise and challenge throughout the programme lifecycle.
  • Lead a team of project, programme, and portfolio subject matter experts.

Skills and Expertise:

  • Proven leadership experience in project delivery.
  • Extensive knowledge of project management methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring teams.
  • Subject matter expertise in project delivery.
  • Experience in overseeing large, complex project portfolios.
