About the Role:

This role leads and develops clinical pharmacy services within mental health inpatient settings in Staffordshire. The primary objective is to deliver high-quality, patient-focused care by implementing and monitoring Trust clinical pharmacy standards, identifying service gaps, and utilizing quality improvement methodologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, participate in, and develop clinical pharmacy service provision across various mental health inpatient settings (e.g., Psychiatric Intensive Care Units, Acute Admissions, Dementia).
  • Implement and monitor Trust clinical pharmacy standards, ensuring high-quality and patient-focused services.
  • Identify and address service gaps and problem areas, using appropriate methods (e.g., quality improvement, research).
  • Comply with and enforce policies, procedures, and standards for safe, effective, and economic medicine use.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on medicines issues (e.g., safe storage, unlicensed medicines) to clinical pharmacy and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Develop and monitor Pharmacy KPIs through the Service Clinical Lead Pharmacist.
  • Assist with and conduct risk assessments, critical incident reviews, and adverse event reporting.
  • Provide clinical pharmacy input at ward level to optimize medicine use.
  • Oversee safe dispensary procedures adhering to legislation and professional codes.
  • Support the Medicines Safety Officer and Trust risk teams by contributing to Pharmacy Governance and Trust Medicines Safety Group meetings.
  • Promote optimal antimicrobial use in liaison with Infection Prevention and Control Leads.
  • Analyze medicine expenditure with clinical interpretation to enhance cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop systems to ensure patient and carer understanding of medication management.
  • Liaise with GPs, community pharmacies, and other providers for patient care continuity.
  • Support management of clinical digital systems involving medicines.
  • Support clinical trials service provision in accordance with departmental and Trust standards.
  • Manage clinical pharmacy teams (recruitment, induction, work allocation, performance reviews, development plans).
  • Promote continuous professional and personal development of all staff.
  • Ensure adherence to Health and Safety regulations.
  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate clinical pharmacy training.
  • Support development of the future pharmacy workforce.
  • Participate in senior meetings as required.
  • Capture data to support development of IT and communication systems.
  • Ensure formulary compliance and support non-formulary preparations where appropriate.
  • Support workforce planning and business continuity.
  • Provide ward and dispensary cover as needed.
  • Lead and support audit, research, and service improvement programmes.
  • Cover aspects of community service delivery when required.

Skills and Expertise:

  • Registered Pharmacist with strong clinical experience.
  • Experience in mental health settings preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Proficiency in using relevant digital systems.
  • Knowledge of medicines information services and clinical trials.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
