About the Role:
As an Operational Support Officer at HMP Haverigg, you’ll play a vital role in the day-to-day running of the prison. You’ll be part of a dedicated team, managing a range of support services essential to maintaining a secure and efficient environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure secure entry and exit of staff, visitors, and vehicles (gate/portal duties).
- Conduct searches of staff, prisoners, visitors, contractors, and vehicles.
- Issue and collect staff keys/radios.
- Operate the establishment radio system and monitor CCTV, reporting suspicious activities.
- Book and process visitor arrivals, and escort as needed.
- Monitor and log mail, reporting illicit or contraband items.
- Ensure cell doors are locked/secure and all prisoners are accounted for during night duties.
- Assist in reception tasks, photographing prisoners, collating documentation, and searching/x-raying prisoner property.
- Supervise prisoners as required, handling clothing/property exchanges.
- Deliver and collect food trolleys, potentially using an electric tug vehicle.
- Transport prisoners and escorts to destinations.
- Collect mail from the local sorting office.
- Monitor the Personal Identification Number (PIN) system, logging PIN phone requests, completing paperwork, and verifying solicitor numbers.
- Understand and comply with national and local policies, and respond appropriately to emergency procedures.
Skills and Expertise:
- Excellent communication skills (English or Welsh, as required).
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
- Experience in security or related fields (preferred).
- Proven ability to follow procedures and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work shifts, evenings, weekends, and bank/public holidays.

- 25 days annual leave, increasing to 30 days after 10 years’ service (pro-rata).
