About the Role:

Serco Maritime Services is seeking a highly motivated Second Engineer to join our team in Kyle of Lochalsh. This full-time, permanent position, offering a 6 weeks on/3 weeks off schedule, provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to a professional and skilled team supporting clients in the region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct planned, emergency, and repair maintenance of propulsion, auxiliary, deck machinery, air conditioning, domestic installations, boilers, fittings, and structures.
  • Supervise main engine and auxiliary maintenance, ensuring coordinated performance.
  • Keep the Chief Engineer informed of maintenance progress.
  • Maintain a clean and organized engine room, ensuring clear access to stairs, ladders, and walkways.
  • Monitor, control, and document spare parts and stores usage.
  • Liaise with other ship staff to provide feedback and early warnings to the Chief Engineer regarding potential hazards.
  • Ensure all safety equipment, emergency procedures, and contingency plans are understood and adhered to by engine room staff.
  • Ensure necessary safeguards are in place before any maintenance or repair work.
  • Adhere to company Safety Management System (SMS) standards, specifically Permit to Work/Tag Out Systems, Shipboard Management Team, and Shipboard Safety Committee protocols.

Skills and Expertise:

  • Certificate of Competence as Second Engineer (3000kW).
  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques (5 Year Refresher Course).
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (5 Year Refresher Course).
  • STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (5 Year Refresher Course).
  • STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft (5 Year Refresher Course).
  • STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (5 Year Refresher Course).
  • STCW Elementary First Aid.
  • Unrestricted ENG1 certification.
  • Passport.
  • Methodical approach.
  • Knowledge of company/industry specific systems (preferred): Company Safety Management System (SMS), Integrated Management System (IMS), International Safety Management (ISM), International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS), Code of Safe Working Practices (CoSWP), International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).
  • Ships Safety Officer (preferred).
  • Manual Handling experience (preferred).
