About the Role:

Lead the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) nursing team, ensuring high-quality patient care and adherence to best practices. Manage shift-based communication and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize care processes. Oversee compliance with Trust policies and departmental procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and families, including those with challenging behaviors.
  • Deal sensitively and compassionately with patients, carers, and staff in various emotional situations.
  • Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to foster learning and improve care delivery.
  • Manage multiple and simultaneous situations professionally and effectively.
  • Convey difficult information to patients, carers, staff, and Trust personnel, including sensitive situations like end-of-life discussions.
  • Lead communication within the UTC on a shift-by-shift basis, liaising with external agencies.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and confidential communication regarding patient care and well-being.
  • Provide patients and carers with care advice.
  • Collaborate and lead staff in patient care, treatment, and discharge, offering specialist nursing advice.
  • Communicate distressing information empathetically and professionally.
  • Act as a positive role model, maintaining team morale, and resolving conflicts.
  • Work closely with the Matron and Lead Clinician to translate the UTC’s vision and goals into practice.
  • Oversee patient care, management, and flow throughout the UTC.
  • Maintain awareness of potential 4-hour breaches and work with the site team to meet targets and prevent breaches.
  • Validate breaches daily and attend site, operational, and departmental meetings to represent the UTC.
  • Ensure implementation and compliance with departmental, Trust-wide, national, and governmental policies.
  • Attend staff, departmental, and Trust-wide meetings as directed.
  • Manage incidents, complaints, and undue occurrences according to Trust policy.
  • Undertake the duty of candour and support the maintenance of the departmental risk register.
  • Identify areas of risk and address them through appropriate governance structures.
  • Participate in health, safety, fire, and quality audits.
  • Plan, assess, develop, and evaluate care programs in the UTC daily.
  • Establish and maintain named link nurse roles.
  • Implement Trust HR policies, addressing staffing matters.
  • Plan and schedule duty rotas, leave, and study leave.
  • Monitor absences and temporary staff, ensuring prudent staffing decisions.
  • Allocate staff resources appropriately.
  • Maintain and update electronic rota management systems.
  • Monitor staff documentation for accuracy and address deficiencies.
  • Ensure staff training and appraisals are up to date.
  • Support recruitment, selection, induction, and training of new staff.
  • Work in accordance with infection control policies.
  • Liaise with security and/or police to address abusive or aggressive individuals.
  • Serve as an authorized signatory for controlled drugs.
  • Maintain departmental and Trust patient record systems.
  • Safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Manage resources effectively, monitor the economical use of supplies and equipment, and address hazards.
  • Contribute to policy implementation and development affecting the Emergency Department.
  • Collect accurate data, participate in clinical trials and audits, and recommend changes.
  • Base personal nursing practice on current research and professional knowledge, sharing this information with staff.
